The preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is the route of entry to NMSC programs. The 2009 PSAT/NMSQT to be given in October is the entry vehicle to the competitions for awards to be offered in 2011. Annually, some 55,000 students receive recognition through NMSC's programs, and about 10,500 are chosen to receive scholarships for college undergraduate study.
Information about program entry requirements is provided in the PSAT/NMSQT Official Student Guide, in NMSC publications – Guide to the National Merit Scholarship Program and Information Booklet for the National Achievement Scholarship Program – Which are sent to participating high schools in September, and on NMSC’s Web site, www.nationalmerit.org.
