GENERAL

The following quote is brought to you by Canyon's Leadership program to help spread encouragement and awareness during anti-bullying month:

"Until you have learned to be tolerant with those who do not always agree with you; Until you have cultivated the habit of saying some kind word of those whom you don't admire; until you have formed the habit of looking for the good instead of the bad in others, you will be neither successful or truly happy as we are all different." --Napoleon Hill

CONGRATULATIONS to the Girls Golf team for placing 4th in the first round of the Newhall Cup tournament and the Foothill league match #5. Congratulations to Sabrina Senff for shooting a team low 46 and qualifying for the Newhall Cup individual playoffs.

CAREER SPOTLIGHT – ENGINEERING:  Have you ever thought of Engineering and Design as a possible career field?  Are you an innovator, or interested in robotics, or planning to pursue higher education in engineering?  ROP offers the Exploring Engineering Technologies beginning and advanced courses.  Learn to use AutoDesk Inventor or SolidWorks.  Students design and build vehicles, test propulsion, design, build and program robots, compete in robotics competitions, and design and create a proof of concept using a 3-D printer.  Stop by the ROP office to sign up today.

COSMETOLOGY: Cosmetology applications for Spring 2015 Juniors are now available in the ROP office.  See Mrs. Gaines for more information and to obtain an application package.  Don’t miss out on an exciting opportunity

JUNIORS OR SENIORS interested in taking a CAREER CLASS offered by ROP next semester need to see Mrs. Gaines in the ROP office.  ROP’s Career Technical Education (CTE) offer students classroom instruction with relevant and, practical and work-based experiences that prepare students for post-secondary college and careers. Stop by the ROP office for a list of available classes, additional information or to sign up for a class.

ROP BROADCAST JOURNALISM is looking for a few good students!  Would you like to earn six figures and be famous for reading the news?  Then this is the class for you!  We work out of a real television studio, we cover events throughout the city, and we create programing that is seen on Time-Warner Cable.  If you want to see your name on the credits of a television program, then see Mrs. Gaines in the ROP office.  Sign up today!

FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, DFYIT is partnering with Family Promise, a local group that helps the homeless population, to collect as many new pairs of socks as possible during the month of October.  This is something that all high school DFYIT groups are participating in - let's beat all of the other high schools by collecting the most socks.  Socks can be for adults, children, male or female.  Just bring in a new pair of socks to Mrs. Parks in A-3.

SENIORS- The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship Program is an undergraduate scholarship program available to high-achieving high school seniors with financial need who seek to attend the nations's best 4-year colleges and universities. The Foundation will select up to 40 applicants nationwide for this highly selective scholarship where scholars may receive up to $40,000 per year! Visit WWW.JKCF.ORG for details. Application deadline is November 4th.

CAL LU UNIVERSITY (California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks) is accepting applications. As a private school, the tuition can be higher, but this school offers lots of financial support.  For example, if you are accepted to UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, DAVIS, or UCSD, you can attend Cal Lu for a UC price.  A very good deal!  If you want to apply for a non-binding early action opportunity, the deadline is November 1st. Please apply using the Common App.

A lot of the UCs and CSUs have Open Houses/ Preview Days.  This is a day to visit the campus and learn more about the school.  For example, UC Merced and Cal State East Bay (which is NOT an impacted college so it is easier to get in and easier to get the major you want) will be having their Preview Days this Saturday, October 18th.  Check out your favorite colleges on-line for their dates.

Additionally, Loyola Marymount University (which is in LA closer to the beach) will be having an Open House on Sunday, October 19th.  DePaul University (which is in Chicago) will be having a meeting for students and their parents on Monday, October 20, at 7:00 pm at Hilton Pasadena, 168 S Los Robles Ave. Pasadena, 91101.
