GENERAL

 

ATTENTION COWBOYS:....Please be aware that any Halloween costumes that will be worn at school cannot violate dress code policy.  Shorts and skirts cannot be excessively short and shirts cannot show your midriff.  In addition, costumes cannot be excessively gory or bloody.  Lastly, you cannot wear any masks at school. 

 

ATTENTION STUDENTS:  Ms. Bacon will be serving as a substitute for Counselor Ross Pollack.  If you normally work with Mr. Pollack, please stop by and introduce yourself to Ms. Bacon and let her know how she can help.

 

Are you a junior or an honors-level sophomore who did NOT sign up for the PSAT for Saturday, October 19th?  If you are interested in taking the test on a stand-by basis, be at CHS main gym at 7:45 ready to sign in on the wait-list and ready to test.  IF extra tests are available, be prepared to pay with $20 cash or a check made out to Canyon ASB.  Test will start at 8am and be over by 11:30-ish.  We cannot predict or promise that you will get to test; again, this is on a stand-by basis only for those who missed sign-ups at registration.

 

ATENCION! Are you interested in showing your pride on Mexican cultural dance, or simply your passion or desire to dance and represent. This is the time! Come and join us in our informational meeting this Monday and Wednesday at 3pm in room D-5. You have two options - Do not miss out! Hope to see you there.

 

AFJROTC fundraiser:  Come support the AFJROTC, they will be having a fundraiser at Mountasia on November 15.  Prices and details are on the fliers posted around the school.  You may purchase tickets at the booth located near the front gate during both brunches and lunch. 

 

Save the date:  the ASVAB is exam will be on March 11th from 8am to 11:30 am in the library.  Sign-ups will begin in late February in the Counseling Office.  The ASVAB tests academic skill levels and has a vocational component.  Students take this test if they are interested in learning about career options in the military. The test is free.  More info in February!

 

UCLA African-American College Night Event:  Valencia High School will be hosting this event to assist students and their families in planning for college. All students in grades 9-12 and their families are encouraged to attend on Tuesday, October 15th, 6:30pm-830pm at Valencia High School (Theater), 27801 N. Dickason Dr., Valencia CA 91355 (Please print a copy of your transcript from the Campus Portal or ask for a copy from the Counseling Office to bring with you to the event.)

 

There is a TOUR OF HENRY MAYO scheduled for Monday, October 28 from 3:30-5:00 for students interested in the medical/health sciences field.  See Mrs. King in room G-105 or Mr. d’Autremont in the main office for more information and permission slips.

 

Are you interested in attending OBERLIN COLLEGE?  They are a leading liberal arts college, with a world-renowned Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio?  They are having a info-session Sunday, October 27th, from 2-4pm at the home of Susan Goland, 7728 Hosford Ave., LA, CA 90045 (near LAX).  The event will be held outside, so please dress appropriately,  RSVP on-line at www.oberlin.edu/admissions/rsvp

MEETINGS

 

ANY ENVIROMENTALISTS OUT THERE?  If so, come to the L.E.A.F. Club meeting in room F-4 on Monday’s at lunch.  If you can’t make the meeting, but would like to do the volunteer work, contact Mr. Motherspaw.  Hope to see you at our first meeting TODAY.

 

POKEMON X AND Y.  Come out TODAY to celebrate and compete to be a Pokemon master!  Pokemon club is in B-6 during lunch on Mondays.

 

SENIORS

 

SENIORS:  THE RONALD MC DONALD HOUSE CHARITIES of Southern California will fund 109 scholarships to high school seniors this year as part of an ongoing commitment to education. If you are a legal U.S. resident with a minimum 2.7 GPA, you may apply! Go to www.rmhc.org for the application. January 21, 2014 is the application deadline.

 

USC is coming to CHS!  If you are applying to USC, please come to an information meeting Wed., Oct. 30th during 5th period (12:08 to 12:48) or during the first few minutes of lunch, in H-1.

To RSVP to meet the USC Admissions representative, you must sign up in the Counseling Office.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN COLLEGE PLANNING CONFERENCE @ Golden Valley High School on Robert E. Lee Parkway, Saturday, November 16th, Workshops from 8:30 to 12 and a Mini-College Fair from 12-1pm.  This is a wonderful event for juniors, seniors, and their parents.  Food and raffles and workshops including:  Finding the Right College, Writing Your Personal Statement, Applying to College, Getting Financial Aid/Scholarships, Parents' Workshops.  Learn about Howard, Spelman, Hampton, CSUN and more! GOOD NEWS!  DEADLINE EXTENDED!  Do you like money?  Do you like to share your ideas?  Here IS the Speech Contest/Scholarship for you!  Prepare and practice a 5-minute speech on "How should the United States immigration policies be reformed and implemented?" and share your thoughts at West Ranch High School (from 6:00 to 8:30 pm).  Business attire is expected.  October 24th is the date of the Scholarship Competition BUT you must turn in a written copy of your speech to the Counseling Office here at CHS by October 18th.  Competition is sponsored by The SCV Bar Association and the judges will actually be from Superior Court.  First prize:  $750.  Second prize:  $500.
