DRESS CODE VIOLATION:  Have you been recently asked to change your shirt due to a dress code violation?  Did Canyon Administration give you a Canyon t-shirt to wear for the day?  If so, please remember to wash and return the Canyon t-shirt to the Student Responsibility Center (SRC) to get your original shirt back.  You have 10 days to return for the Canyon  t-shirt and pick up your original shirt.  Canyon High School is not responsible for articles of clothing left in the SRC after 10 days. 

 

STUDENT MAKE-UP PICTURE DAY is Thursday Oct. 11th—room H-1.  Before school and Brunches only!!!!

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL:  Hey Cowboys!!! Girls Basketball is having a free-throw-a-thon TODAY at 6 p.m.  Each team will be shooting until they hit 1000.  Come out and cheer them on!

OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM WITH THE BAND IN COMPETITIVE PARADES!!  We are looking for 6 girls to perform in front of the band with the C A N Y O N letters at our competitions.  Dance experience could be helpful, but not required.  If interested, you need to have an open 1st period.  Please come to the band room Q6 this Friday at lunch.  If you have questions, ask Mrs. Palmer. 

 

HEY COWBOYS!  Do you love Broadway musicals?  Well, if so, have we got something special for you!  The choirs will present Canyon Choirs on Broadway TONIGHT at 7:30 p.m. at Golden Valley HS.  The cost is $5.00 with an ASB card and $7.00 without.  Come and hear some of your favorite music from Wicked, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and many more.

 

TEEN READ WEEK is Oct 15th-19th. The theme this year is It Came From the Library: Dare to Read for the Fun of It! To celebrate, we are hosting our own Mr. Smith on Tuesday, Oct. 16th. He'll be talking in the library at lunch about the writing process, the power of words, and his new novel Passenger. If you've read any of his novels Ghost Medicine, In the Path of Falling Objects, Marbury Lens, or Stick, you know that Mr. Smith writes great stories. You can attend his talk in the library at lunch if you get a ticket from your English teacher. Remember this is a ticketed event! You'll have to have a ticket to attend, and you can get yours from your English teacher. See you in the library, IF YOU DARE!

By the way-the library will only be open to ticket holders @ lunch Oct. 16th for this event.

 

PSAT PRACTICE TEST BOOKLETS:  If you signed up for the test and have not picked up your PSAT practice test booklet, please come to the Counseling Office during brunch or lunch to pick one up.  The test will be given on Wednesday, October 17 at 8:00 am.

 

STUDENTS, are you thinking about attending COC or other community college when you graduate?  The Canyon Counseling department has created an important informational meeting for you.  Counselors from COC will be coming to discuss programs that will help you!   The meeting will be on Thursday, October 18th at 7 pm in the A-lecture hall.  This meeting is open to ALL grade levels.  If you would like to come, please see Mrs. Goller in the counseling office to sign up.

 

SIGN UPS FOR SPRING 2013 ROP CAREER CLASSES has now started.  See Mrs. Gaines in the ROP office for more information or to sign up for a class.  You can also find a list of classes and course catalog on the ROP website at www.HartROP.com ( http://www.hartrop.com/ ).

 

ROP COSMETOLOGY - Spring 2013 Applications will be available on Tuesday 10/9.

Students interested in the ROP Cosmetology program are invited to attend the cosmetology information meeting on Tuesday 10/9 at 12:30 in H-1.  Applications for the spring semester will be made available at that time.  Parents are welcome to attend.

 

THE ROP CAREER INTERNSHIP CLASS is accepting applications for second quarter of this Fall semester. Students work at their internship site for 4-8 hours a week while attending class one hour a week. Internships may be available in a variety of industries including: Accounting, Automotive, Chemistry, Chiropractic, Computer Programming, Culinary, Golf Facility Management, Graphic Design, Legal, Marketing, Engineering, Physical Therapy, and Teaching.

 Students must be 16 or older to take the class and have good grades and citizenship.  The class takes places outside of school hours and students need to provide their own transportation. Register for the class with the ROP Specialist at your school. Applications are due by October 12.

 

 

COLLEGE 2 CAREER DAY:  College of the Canyons is hosting a College to Career Day on their Valencia campus on Saturday, October 13, from 9am until 1 pm.  Go to the Dianne G. Van Hook University Center.  Admission is free.  Discussions about career opportunities in hot industries, community college programs and transfers, and hands-on demonstrations will be part of the program offered that day.  See Loida Sanchez, Career Coach, in our counseling office for more information or check the COC website at www.canyons.edu.

MEETINGS

 

MEETING OF THE LATIN DANCE CLUB (Folklorico, Cumbia, Banda, Merengue, Bachata and Salsa). It is going to take place during lunch and after school in room D-5. Anyone is welcome and no experience is required, it is a club to learn the dances.

 

EQUESTRIAN CLUB MEETING Thurs at lunch in T-1, all members must attend!

 

OPERATION US: Our training day is this Friday (October 12th). We will be meeting at the front of the school at 8:15 AM. If you are a returning member please wear your Operation US t-shirt. See you soon!

 

CSF is having its Fall Members meeting on Oct. 10 at 8 a.m. in the library. We'll see you then!

 

SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY:  ¿Quieren  participar en La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica este año?  VENGAN VENGAN VENGAN all prospective SHH members who haven't yet submitted their applications and donations must do so TODAY at lunch in D-6. 

 

A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY:  Students: the next general meeting for A Little Goes a Long Way will be this Thursday, October 11, in room D-4 at lunch. Show up promptly at the beginning of lunch so we can discuss our first few fundraisers and future ideas.

 

GSA(Gay/Straight Alliance) Club is meeting Thursday (10/11) during lunch in A- Lecture Hall. Everyone is always welcome.

 

SENIORS

 

DIPLOMA NAME FORM:  Your Government or Economics teacher will be asking you to complete the Diploma Name Form during class sometime this week.  Please print your legal first, middle and last name as it is printed on your birth certificate.  This will help to insure the correct spelling on your diploma.  If you don’t receive a form sometime this week, you may pick one up in the Counseling Office next week.

 

SENIOR PORTRAITS: Seniors would you like your portrait in the yearbook? Then you really, really need to call and set up an appointment with O'Connor photography ASAP. If you don't have your portrait taken by the end of the month, you won't be in the senior section of the book...so get it done.

Are you interested in learning about the Johnson & Wales?  It is a private career-oriented college and have FOUR campuses across the U.S.  So you can attend in Miami, Florida, Denver, Colorado, Providence, Rhode Island, or Charlotte, North Carolina.  The rep will be here today (Wed.) in H-1 for 5th period.
