GENERAL
JOURNALISM/PONY EXPRESS is looking for a few good students to replace some graduating seniors. If you like to write, take pictures, use photoshop or indesign or want to learn, see Mr. Dubin in B7 or speak to your counselor. It is not too late to sign up!
DRESS CODE: Students are reminded about the dress code at Canyon High School. Crop tops, halter and strapless tops, low cut blouses, see-through or backless shirts and swim suit tops are NOT ALLOWED! Also, gang styles, accessories, symbols and clothing modifications are not allowed. T-shirts with graphics which depict anti-social behavior, controlled substances, alcohol beverages, violence, or sexual activities are prohibited.
GRAD-O-GRAMS ARE ON SALE NOW! If you have a friend who is graduating or a teacher or staff member that you'd like to thank for their service this year, then buy a Grad-o-Gram from a YES-I-CAN member. For only $4, your friend or staff member will receive a card, a graduation bear, and a lollipop to be delivered to them during class time. Grad-o-grams will be on sale this week on the outdoor stage during both brunches or you can order them in C3. They will be delivered next week.
HERE IS A GREAT “TWO FOR ONE” deal if you are responsible enough to handle it. If you are going to be a junior or senior next year, consider adding the “WORK EXPERIENCE” class to your fall schedule. You will be issued a work permit and you will be earning money while you complete up to 40 credits. The Work Experience Class will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your professional ability to work while being responsible by attending your classes. Class size is limited. If interested contact Mr. Ward or your Counselor.
SUMMER MELTDOWN tickets on sale in C3. The concert is THIS Saturday at the Plaza Theater in Newhall. Over 30 acts for the low price of $10. Headliners include Iration, Mod Sun, Vibe, Pacific Dub, and 25 other acts. Tickets are $20 online and the day of so buy them now!
ARE YOU IN SPANISH 1B OR SPANISH 2B and you might get a D or an F? Well, these classes are going to be offered in summer school at Golden Valley. This is a GREAT opportunity for YOU because you can re-take the class, keep the credits with the higher grade and you can go onto Spanish 2 in the fall, complete your A-G for a CSU school, or be able to go on to Spanish 3 if you are interested in a more competitive school. Such a deal! So, use the regular summer school form and write in either Spanish 1B or 2B on the form. Golden Valley already has many sign-ups!
MEETINGS
IMPACT CLUB: We are having a mandatory meeting on Tuesday, May 22 at lunch in U-7. We will be holding officer interviews for next year. See you there!
SENIORS
SENIOR SIGNING PARTY: Seniors, do you hate your friends, pizza, and having a good time? Then skip the senior signing party and wait in line with the underclassmen for your yearbook next week... Otherwise there are a few tickets left, so buy one before they sell out completely. $7 in ASB.
SENIORS: Mark your calendars for the Senior Sunset on Monday, May 28 at 7:00 p.m. It will be a cost-free night where we will be watching a movie on the inflatable big screen. Bring blankets and chairs to watch on the football field. Dinner will be served, but drinks will not be provided.

Young Scholar Program - California State University Dominguez Hills offers DISTANCE LEARNING college courses for high school students in California. They can earn up to six units of college credit each semester for $3.50. Courses are broadcast live on cable television and webcast live on the Internet at http://dhtv.csudh.edu each semester on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 to 4:30PM. Students who view the live broadcasts/webcasts can interact with the instructor by phone or e-mail. Students can also view archived videos of the classes at http://youtube.com/csudhtv. Credits for the courses are recorded on a Dominguez Hills transcript which can be transferred to any college or university. Each college and university will determine if the courses meet their general education and degree requirements. Are you interested in a six-week FILM Institute (June 24- August 4th)or a three-week Nature Writers Rafting Expedition (June 11 - 30th) or a 4-day Rodeo Camp for girls (June 18- 21)or a six-week Academic, Technology, Arts and Outdoor experience (June 24 - August 4)? The film institute has working professionals from New York and Hollywood to help students create, script, shoot, edit, and complete their own film. OR go to the Grand Canyon to white-water raft, hike, swim, and explore. OR use their professional equestrian center to learn/improve on barrel racing, pole bending, goat-tying, and breakaway roping. Riders must provide own horse and equipment. OR you make take classes, where choices include robotics, computer game design, and studio music production. Want to learn more about architecture and design? SCI-Arc's Design Immersion Days is a four-week summer program for rising juniors and seniors that will help students learn freehand sketching, photography, critical and analytical thinking, non-linear thinking, design drawing, design modeling, graphic presentation, and portfolio layout and design. Have you heard of DigiPen College? It is in Redmond, Washington and it the #3 college in the country for game design. Digi-pen offers degrees in game design, digital arts, animation, computer science and engineering, and real-time interactive simulation AND they have a pre-college summer programs. Interested in dance? jazz? art & media? or theater? The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA has summer programs in each. Some are 2 weeks and some are 4 weeks. Are you interested in taking pre-college classes in Poughkeepsie, New York (which in on the Hudson River) or Florence, Italy? Marist College (a small liberal arts college) has a summer program from July 15 - 28th. In New York you can choose from Business, creative writing, criminal justice, digital movie making, environmental science, fashion, game design, Spanish, sports communication, and theater. Are you interested in taking classes in St. Louis, Missouri? Washington University in St. Louis has a summer program for high school students. They have BOTH a Scholars Program (classes in bio-medical, languages, humanities, economics, and more to choose from) and three institutes that include a Writing, Pre-med, or a Photojournalism Institutes. Did you want to get a head start on your college experience in Johnson and Wales University? If you are a junior, you can apply for their Early Enrollment Program. It is called EEP. They have four campuses (Providence, RI, North Miami, FL, Denver, CO, or Charlotte, NC). For your senior year, you would attend there, earning college AND high school credits. So when you graduate from high school, you will also have a year of college done. Their programs are in Hospitality, College of Culinary Arts, College of Business, Technology (only at Providence) OR Arts & Sciences (only at Providence). The BEST BENEFIT is that you is that for the first year they only charge you HALF of the normal tuition. Plus you could still be eligible for more financial aid. Are you interested in taking college classes at CSUN this summer? High school students may take academic classes WITHOUT formally applying/being accepted to the university! This is called OPEN UNIVERSITY, and is through The TSENG College at CSUN. So, Yes, you can take classes on a space-available basis for $320/unit, with instructor approval and if you meet the course requirements. Classes are transferable to other universities. FRESHMEN! COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS will be hosting a Summer Institute for incoming 9th and 10th grade students this summer. The goal of the Institute is to provide hands-on career exploration and learning opportunities to students in a variety of areas and subjects including: culinary arts, robotics, motion picture special effects, video game design, sports medicine, welding, and alternative energy fabrication. The camp will run the week of July 30th through August 3rd, 9 a.m to 3:30 p.m. Registration, as well as course descriptions, are available online at www.canyons.edu/communityed
BUILDING HISPANIC LEADERS: If you are going to be a 10th, 11th, or 12th grader next year, have a 2.5 overall GPA or higher, have leadership abilities, and are interested in learning about teamwork and leadership as well as Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics you might want to attend the National Hispanic Youth Research & Leadership Program for July 2nd - July 14th. Student must provide travel to and from Albuquerque, New Mexico, but all other expenses (food, boarding, local travel) are paid. This free program is at the University of New Mexico. SUMMER INTERNSHIPS FOR 9th, 10th, and 11th GRADERS The ROP Career Internship class is having a summer class from 6/18 - 7/18. Students complete an unpaid workplace internship in order to learn about a career field. Students work from 4 - 12 hours a week and earn class credit. They work at the internship site and attend class each week. Students must attend all class dates. Students will be chosen who have a good record of grades, attendance, and behavior. Students must provide their own transportation. To enroll, students need to ROP application and return to their ROP advisor by May 17.
