GENERAL

 

AP TESTING:  During AP Testing there will be NO paging or announcements made over the PA system. 

 

AUDITIONS for the fall 2012 children's theatre production "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" will take place in the Q-Theatre on Thursday May 17th at 2 PM for those without a 7th period or 3 PM for those with a 7th period. No preparation necessary. 

 

CONGRATULATIONS to the Jazz Ensemble for earning 1st place at the Westlake Jazz Festival!  Outstanding soloist awards were presented to Devin Haerle, Robin Levy, Hannah Vaverka, Lauren DeFigueiredo, Rachael McCrary and Chris Iacovetti.

 

DRESS CODE:  Students are reminded about the dress code at Canyon High School.  Crop tops, halter and strapless tops, low cut blouses, see-through or backless shirts and swim suit tops are NOT ALLOWED!  Also, gang styles, accessories, symbols and clothing modifications are not allowed.  T-shirts with graphics which depict anti-social behavior, controlled substances, alcohol beverages, violence, or sexual activities are prohibited.

 

GRAD-O-GRAMS ARE ON SALE NOW!  If you have a friend who is graduating or a teacher or staff member that you'd like to thank for their service this year, then buy a Grad-o-Gram from a YES-I-CAN member.  For only $4, your friend or staff member will receive a card, a graduation bear, and a lollipop to be delivered to them during class time.  Grad-o-grams will be on sale this week on the outdoor stage during both brunches or you can order them in C3.  They will be delivered next week.  

 

SUMMER MELTDOWN tickets on sale in C3.  The concert is THIS Saturday at the Plaza Theater in Newhall. Over 30 acts for the low price of $10.  Headliners include Iration, Mod Sun, Vibe, Pacific Dub, and 25 other acts. Tickets are $20 online and the day of so buy them now!

 

ARE YOU IN SPANISH 1B OR SPANISH 2B and you might get a D or an F?  Well, these classes are going to be offered in summer school at Golden Valley.  This is a GREAT opportunity for YOU because you can re-take the class, keep the credits with the higher grade and you can go onto Spanish 2 in the fall, complete your A-G for a CSU school, or be able to go on to Spanish 3 if you are interested in a more competitive school.  Such a deal!  So, use the regular summer school form and write in either Spanish 1B or 2B on the form.  Golden Valley already has many sign-ups! 

 

ARE YOU 16 OR UNDER AND INTERESTED IN SUMMER FUN AT Valley Trails just above Lake Castaic?  Bring your swim suit and sleeping bag!  Camp Cottontail is a traditional resident camp with LA Adventure Surf and Watersports Camp.   They go to local beaches and lakes and have activities like kayaking, swimming, zip-line, mini-bikes, panning for gold, go-karts, a climbing wall, wood working, games, frisbee-golf, hiking, archery, low ropes, lacrosse, cooking projects and more.  For more info go to www.campcottontail.com or call 818.324.9921 or 661.257.0266 or www.vtranch.com

FRESHMEN! COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS will be hosting a Summer Institute for incoming 9th and 10th grade students this summer.  The goal of the Institute is to provide hands-on career exploration and learning opportunities to students in a variety of areas and subjects including: culinary arts, robotics, motion picture special effects, video game design, sports medicine, welding, and alternative energy fabrication. The camp will run the week of July 30th through August 3rd, 9 a.m to 3:30 p.m. Registration, as well as course descriptions, are available online at www.canyons.edu/communityed

 

COLLEGE & CAREER FAIR!  Mark your calendars for next fall’s College & Career Fair! The date is Thursday, September 13 from 6-9 pm at Golden Valley High School.  Over 100 representatives from 2 and 4 year colleges and universities, as well as career preparation programs and the military will be on hand to answer questions and provide admissions advice. 

 

BUILDING HISPANIC LEADERS:  If you are going to be a 10th, 11th, or 12th grader next year, have a 2.5 overall GPA or higher, have leadership abilities, and are interested in learning about teamwork and leadership as well as Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics you might want to attend the National Hispanic Youth Research & Leadership Program for July 2nd - July 14th.  Student must provide travel to and from Albuquerque, New Mexico, but all other expenses (food, boarding, local travel) are paid.  This free program is at the University of New Mexico.  The application is also free.  Contact Joe Velasquez at [email protected] or  202.487.0031 OR Rosa Cervantes at [email protected] or 505.277.0401.  Download your app at http://ceop.unm.edu/cpp/summer/  Best consideration will be for those apply who by May 25th.

 

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS FOR 9th, 10th, and 11th GRADERS   The ROP Career Internship class is having a summer class from 6/18 - 7/18. Students complete an unpaid workplace internship in order to learn about a career field.  Students work from 4 - 12 hours a week and earn class credit.  They work at the internship site and attend class each week.  Students must attend all class dates.  Students will be chosen who have a good record of grades, attendance, and behavior. Students must provide their own transportation.  To enroll, students need to ROP application and return to their ROP advisor by May 17.  See ROP advisor for details or the website: www.hartrop.com, Career Internship class.

SENIOR SIGNING PARTY: Seniors today is your last chance to buy a signing party ticket for $5. Get your yearbook tomorrow, have some pizza and share some memories with your friends one last time before your time at Canyon disappears.

 

ATTENTION CSF SEALBEARERS-You have the opportunity to apply for a $500 Canyon High School Chapter Scholarship. Stop by the library to pick up an application. Applications are also available on the CSF page of the library's website. The due date for submitting your completed application TODAY, If you have questions, see Mrs. Hermelin in the library.

 

SENIORS:  Mark your calendars for the Senior Sunset on Monday, May 28 at 7:00 p.m.  It will be a cost-free night where we will be watching a movie on the inflatable big screen.  Bring blankets and chairs to watch on the football field.  Dinner will be served, but drinks will not be provided.
