GENERAL

 

LAST SAT CLASS OF THE YEAR: This is it juniors!  You only have one chance left to sign up for the Revolution Prep SAT class offered right here on campus, taught by Canyon's own Ms. Jones.  A former student commented, "The use of real tests in a real testing atmosphere helped me see the results I wanted."  You can do better on the SATs- just visit revolutionprep.com or stop by E5 to chat with Ms. Jones.  Don't delay- classes start this Saturday!

 

2009-2010 CHEER TRYOUTS are coming up right after Spring Break!  If you are interested, your parents MUST attend one of the information meetings on Monday, March 30 or Wednesday, April 1.  Meetings are at 7 p.m. in the A-lecture hall.  Flyers are available from Ms. Soto, G228.

 

2009-2010 DANCE TEAM AUDITION will be held Saturday, May 2.  This is NOT a dance class, prior dance experience is necessary.  Your parents must attend an information meeting on Tuesday, April 21.  You can check out the dance team at their end-of-the-year show on Saturday, April 18.  Meanwhile, stay tuned for more information right after spring break about the parent meeting and audition.

 

ACADEMY OF THE CANYONS:  Get on the fast track to college!  You can make a change and be a part of a unique, rewarding high school experience!  If you would like to learn more about Academy of the Canyons Middle College High School, you and your parents are invited to attend an informational meeting tomorrow, March 11, at College of the Canyons Cafeteria at 7:00 p.m.  Applications will be distributed a the meeting.

 

Are you intrigued about the creative worlds of FASHION and Business? FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) is offering a 3-day summer program at its 4 campuses in CA.  Check it out at www.fidm.edu/summer program. Also see poster in Counseling Office.

 

BOOK FAIR!  The Book Fair is here and you can find it in H1 during both brunches and during lunch.  Come in and browse and buy some great books.  We will be open during Open House on Thursday night, March 12.  Invite your parents to come and buy you something.

 

THE ASVAB (ARMED SERVICES VOCATIONAL APTITUDE BATTERY) will be administered to juniors and seniors on Wed., 3/11 in B Lecture Hall at 8:00.  The ASVAB is a three-hour exam that measures eight aptitudes and the results can assist students with college and career decisions.  Students may sign-up in the Career Center.

 

BOOK CLUB:  We will be reading Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man.  If you would like to join us and read the book, come to the library to order a copy of the book.  Those already in book club need to come to the library to pick up your copy.  We will read to page 97 for March 13.

 

CHECKMATES CHESS CLUB:  Checkmates Chess Club and other board games will meet every Wednesday and Friday in room G-117.  If you do not know how to play chess, we will teach you.  Bring you lunch and enjoy the competition.  Any questions, please see Mr. Clark in room G-117

 

ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMS:  AP Exam registration started March 2 and will run through March 13, 1:00 PM.  Students may register before school, brunch or during lunch in the ASB office.  The fee for each test is $86, unless the student participates in the free or reduced lunch program.  Students can see Mrs. Haro in the AP office to learn about this program.  Don't forget to sign up!!!

 

POWDER PUFF FOOTBALL:  Hey Cowboys—Canyon is having a Powder Puff Football game for all Junior and senior girls.  Come out and be tough and play some football.  And guys—show us your hidden Cheerleading talent!  Start picking up your applications March 9 outside the ASB Office---don’t forget they are due March 27!!!!

 

LETTERMAN JACKET SIZING: Wednesday, March 11th, Bruches only on the outdoor stage.

 

RENAISSANCE CARD HOLDERS: Your Disneyland trip is March 20, the cost is $70 and you can pick up trip slips outside the ASB office. The first 108 students to turn in their paperwork and money will go.

 

CAREER CENTER NEWS

HIGH SCHOOL MEDIA DAY:  Attend the High School Media Day at West Ranch High School on Saturday, March 14 and explore careers in film and TV.  Meet with professionals working in the industry and learn about required skills, job duties and educational requirements.  Stop by the Career Center for details!

 

CAL DAY:  Take an inside look at the world's leading public university at Cal Day on Saturday, April 18.  Visit UC Berkeley and try hands-on activities, visit labs, take campus tours and more!  Stop by the Career Center for details!

 

MEETINGS

SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY:  Attention Spanish Honor Society members!  You must attend our mandatory meeting today at lunch in D2.  We have lots of information to share with you!  ¡Hasta pronto muchachos!

 

KEY CLUB MEETING:  Hey Key Clubbers!  There is a general meeting on Wednesday, March 11 at lunch in the gym.

 

SENIORS

 

HISPANIC BUSINESS COMMITTEE SCHOLARSHIP:  Seniors who are of Hispanic/Latino background and legal residents with a minimum 2.5 GPA may be eligible for this scholarship. The HBC is Santa Clarita Valley's leading Hispanic organization and Canyon will have 1 senior winner!! Apply today!  Visit the counseling office for an application or download on at www.scvchamber.com.  Applications must be received by March 31, 2009. 

 

SENIORS: The Santa Clarita Valley Administrator Association is offering scholarships ranging from $250-$500.  Applicants who attended school in the Santa Clarita Valley for at least 7 years, has a 2.5 GPA or higher and applied to college or a trade school are eligible. Applications available in the counseling office. Deadline is March 30, 2009.

SENIOR STARS:  If you have been accepted to a 4-year college or university and plan on attending that school in the fall, please see Mrs. Hettema in the counseling office.  We will make a star in your honor and place it in the new showcase cabinet outside the Counseling Office.  Also, if you have received notice of any scholarships or awards, please let Mrs. Hettema know.

 

AFRICAN-AMERICAN FUTURE ACHIEVERS SCHOLARSHIP: Visit the counseling office’s scholarship board for an application, which must be but be postmarked by March 15, 2009.

 

RONALD McDONALD HOUSE presents a $1000 scholarship to seniors who have at least one parent of Asian Pacific heritage and are planning to attend a two or four-year college.  A letter of recommendation and official transcript is required. Applications available in the counseling office. Deadline: March 15.
