GENERAL

ATTENTION COWBOYS:  Please be aware that any Halloween costumes that will be worn at school cannot violate dress code policy.  Shorts and skirts cannot be excessively short and shirts cannot show your midriff.  In addition, costumes cannot be excessively gory or bloody.  Lastly, you CANNOT wear any masks at school. 

 

DFYIT:  On Wednesday, October 22, former Canyon athlete, Nate Longshore, will be speaking in the Gym. He will begin speaking at 1:00.  Please grab your lunch and join us!  This opportunity to hear Nate speak is open to all Canyon students and is being sponsored by the DFYIT club. Also, please don't forget that this is Socktober!  We are partnering with Family Promise to collect as many new pairs of socks as possible during the month of October.  Again while this is sponsored by DFYIT we would appreciate all donations - you don't have to be a club member to help this worthy cause - just bring in a new pair of socks - adult or child - bring to the assembly or bring to A-3 at any time during the month of October.

 

NEW course offering Spring 20145 open to students in all grades.  Criminal Justice – Hybrid Online Course - Yes, this ROP course is available to juniors and seniors in addition to freshmen and sophomores.  ROP Criminal Justice course provides instruction and training for students interested in careers related to law and law enforcement. Students who achieve competency in this course will develop knowledge and skills in the origins and sources of American law, principles on which our law and the legal system developed, structure and procedure of the court system, different categories of criminal cases, the juvenile justice system, oral and written communication and analytical skills.  This course will fill up quickly so stop by the ROP office to sign up.

 

CAREER SPOTLIGHT – ENTERTAINMENT AND TELEVISION:  Are you wanting to learn more about Television and Entertainment?  Would you like to work with cameras or in a control room at a TV Station?  Are you wanting to break into the field of entertainment?  Would you like to build your self-confidence?  For more information about the Entertainment and TV Broadcast Journalism classes, see Mrs. Gaines in the ROP office.

 

 

 

COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS - Careers-on-the-Go!! Is having the following workshops for community members and students interested in learning more about these careers:

Architectural Drafting - Thursday, Oct. 23rd, 2014 - 6:00PM-7:30PM - Mentry Hall Room 343

 

COLLEGE FIELD TRIP TO CSUN CAMPUS:  Canyon will be sponsoring a college field trip to Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, November 12.  The trip will include a school-guided tour of the campus as well as a chance to visit the school bookstore and cafeteria.  Many students have not had an opportunity to visit a college campus, and the counselors at CHS wish to give them that chance.  The bus will leave at 9:00 am and will return to our campus at approximately 2:00 pm.  The cost is $10 (cash only) which covers the cost of the bus.  You will need to bring a lunch or money to buy lunch in the college cafeteria.  Please see Mrs. Hettema in the Counseling Office to pick up the registration and permission slips.  Registration is limited to 50 students and forms will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis with no exceptions. MEETINGS

 

“A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY” will be meeting TODAY at lunch in room D-4. Come at the beginning of lunch if you are interested In joining.  If you have signed up in the past, this meeting is mandatory if you wish to be included on the club roster.

 

STAND UP AND SPEAK UP!  Stand Up meets every Tuesday at lunch in the B-Lecture Hall!

 

ANIME CLUB:  Come to room K-4 during lunch today and join the Anime Club!  Here we will learn about our favorite stories, learn how to draw Anime, and have a terrific time!  Everyone is welcome!  See you there!

 

CHECKMATES CHESS CLUB, YU-GI-OH and Vanguard and other board games meets every Wednesday and Friday in G-117.  Bring your lunch.  Questions, see Mr. Clark in G-117.

 

The Bible talk club, TRUTH BE TOLD, will take place Wednesday in room A-7 at lunch. 

IMPORTANTE! Club Latino de Baile (Latino Dance Club): Come and join us Mondays for bachata, Tuesdays for cumbia and Thursdays for merengue. Practice takes place during lunch in room D-5.  Experience is not required. Hope to see you there!

 

SENIORS

 

ATTENTION ALL SENIOR BOYS!  Mr. Canyon applications are now up in the ASB Office!  If you think you have what it takes to become the 2014 Mr. Canyon, sign up now!  Applications are due by THIS FRIDAY with $20 to the ASB Office.

 

 

 

 

SENIORS- The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship Program is an undergraduate scholarship program available to high-achieving high school seniors with financial need who seek to attend the nation’s best 4-year colleges and universities. The Foundation will select up to 40 applicants nationwide for this highly selective scholarship where scholars may receive up to $40,000 per year! Visit WWW.JKCF.ORG for details. Application deadline is November 4th.

CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY (located in Pittsburgh, PA) is having an Open House in the Los Angeles area for students and their families on Sunday, October 19th at 2 pm.  They will be meeting at the Irvine Marriott, 18000 Von Karman Ave., Irvine, 92612.  Register on-line or call 412.268.2082; RSVP required.  The hour-long session will let you know all about the school.

CAL LU UNIVERSITY (California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks) is accepting applications. As a private school, the tuition can be higher, but this school offers lots of financial support.  For example, if you are accepted to UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, DAVIS, or UCSD, you can attend Cal Lu for a UC price.  A very good deal!  If you want to apply for a non-binding early action opportunity, the deadline is November 1st.
