GENERAL

CANYON HOME FOOTBALL GAMES:  Hey Cowboys!!!  Come to watch our Canyon JV and Varsity Football teams play Golden Valley today ---here at Canyon….BOTH are Canyon home games—JV starts at 4:00 and Varsity at 7:30.  A reminder to students ---ONCE you enter the Varsity football game and leave—YOU MAY NOT RE-ENTER.  If you need a sweater, blanket etc., remember to bring it with you when you arrive.   Footballs, Skateboards, and Scooters are NOT allowed in the stadium or in the parking lot—DO NOT BRING THEM WITH YOU!!!! Noisemakers are not allowed per CIF regulations and that using Noisemakers can result in a forfeit of the game.  ANY inappropriate (clothing, accessories, headgear or body paint) will result in entrance refusal and possible removal if non-compliant.

 

PSAT will be administered Saturday, October 18, starting promptly at 8:00 am.  Students are encouraged to arrive no later than 7:30 am outside of the gym.  By 7:45 am all students will be checked in and seated.   At 7:50, students on the wait-list will be assigned to the seats vacated by those students who are not in attendance.  There will be NO refunds to any students who arrive after 7:50 am even if your seat has been given a student on the wait-list.  Students on the wait-list will get a refund if a test is not available.  Please see Mrs. Hettema on Monday in the counseling office for your refund.  Doors will be closed and testing will begin promptly at 8:00 am.  Any student arriving after 8:00 am will not test!!!  Please be on time.

 

Ay Ay Ay!!!!!  Get your ZUMBA on!!!!  This Saturday, October 18th, La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica is having a fundraiser-----a ZUMBA class!!  Bring your friends, your mom, your favorite teacher, your significant other, or simply yourself and your boogie shoes and get a great workout here on the outdoor stage.  There will be two sessions.  The first class begins at 10AM, and the second class begins at 11.  This will be simply too much fun to miss!  Purchase your tickets from Sra. Santos in D-6 or bring your $10 this Saturday.  Bailemos!

 

COSMETOLOGY: Cosmetology applications for Spring 2015 Juniors are now available in the ROP office.  See Mrs. Gaines for more information and to obtain an application package.  Don’t miss out on an exciting opportunity.

 

OPERATIION US: We are presenting at Valley View on Oct. 2.  . Completed permission slips are due by TODAY at the start of lunch.

DFYIT members - please turn in your permission slips for the October 21 summit - Mrs. Parks cannot get you excused from school for the summit unless your permission slip has been turned in.  Please turn in to Mrs. Parks in A3 as soon as possible.  If you have lost your permission slip or have not picked one up, please stop by A3 to get one.

 

COLLEGE FIELD TRIP TO CSUN CAMPUS:  Canyon will be sponsoring a college field trip to Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, November 12.  The trip will include a school-guided tour of the campus as well as a chance to visit the school bookstore and cafeteria.  Many students have not had an opportunity to visit a college campus, and the counselors at CHS wish to give them that chance.  The bus will leave at 9:00 am and will return to our campus at approximately 2:00 pm.  The cost is $10 (cash only) which covers the cost of the bus.  You will need to bring a lunch or money to buy lunch in the college cafeteria.  Please see Mrs. Hettema in the Counseling Office to pick up the registration and permission slips.  Registration is limited to 50 students and forms will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis with no exceptions. NEW course offering Spring 20145 open to students in all grades.  Criminal Justice – Hybrid Online Course - Yes, this ROP course is available to juniors and seniors in addition to freshmen and sophomores.  ROP Criminal Justice course provides instruction and training for students interested in careers related to law and law enforcement. Students who achieve competency in this course will develop knowledge and skills in the origins and sources of American law, principles on which our law and the legal system developed, structure and procedure of the court system, different categories of criminal cases, the juvenile justice system, oral and written communication and analytical skills.  This course will fill up quickly so stop by the ROP office to sign up.

 

JUNIORS OR SENIORS interested in taking a CAREER CLASS offered by ROP next semester need to see Mrs. Gaines in the ROP office.  ROP’s Career Technical Education (CTE) offer students classroom instruction with relevant and, practical and work-based experiences that prepare students for post-secondary college and careers. Stop by the ROP office for a list of available classes, additional information or to sign up for a class.

 

ROP BROADCAST JOURNALISM is looking for a few good students!  Would you like to earn six figures and be famous for reading the news?  Then this is the class for you!  We work out of a real television studio, we cover events throughout the city, and we create programing that is seen on Time-Warner Cable.  If you want to see your name on the credits of a television program, then see Mrs. Gaines in the ROP office.  Sign up today!

 

FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, DFYIT is partnering with Family Promise, a local group that helps the homeless population, to collect as many new pairs of socks as possible during the month of October.  This is something that all high school DFYIT groups are participating in - let's beat all of the other high schools by collecting the most socks.  Socks can be for adults, children, male or female.  Just bring in a new pair of socks to Mrs. Parks in A-3.

 

MEETINGS

 

CHECKMATES CHESS CLUB, YU-GI-OH and Vanguard and other board games meets every Wednesday and Friday in G-117.  Bring your lunch.  Questions, see Mr. Clark in G-117.

 

IMPORTANTE! Club Latino de Baile (Latino Dance Club): Come and join us Mondays for bachata, Tuesdays for cumbia and Thursdays for merengue. Practice takes place during lunch in room D-5.  Experience is not required. Hope to see you there!

 

SENIORS

 

ATTENTION 2015 SENIORS: If you would like a quote in the yearbook, then it must be submitted before November 21st. Please visit the CANYONYEARBOOK.COM and click the link to submit your quotes. No quotes will be accepted after the 21st and all quotes are subject to approval by administration. Please do this ASAP seniors!

 

SENIORS- The Horatio Alger Scholarship is available to students pursuing a bachelor's degree at an accredited non-profit public or private institution in the U.S. or a two-year institution with the goal of transferring to a four-year institution. Students must demonstrate critical financial need and hold a minimum GPA of 2.0. The application deadline is October 25, 2014. To learn more and apply, visit

SENIORS- The Stokes Educational Scholarship will be awarded to students planning on majoring in computer science or computer/electrical engineering. Minority students are particularly encouraged to apply. Scholarship recipients will receive paid tuition up to $30, 000 per year, a year-round salary, and guaranteed employment. CAL LU UNIVERSITY (California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks) is accepting applications. As a private school, the tuition can be higher, but this school offers lots of financial support.  For example, if you are accepted to UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, DAVIS, or UCSD, you can attend Cal Lu for a UC price.  A very good deal!  If you want to apply for a non-binding early action opportunity, the deadline is November 1st. Please apply using the Common App.

 A LOT OF THE UCs and CSUs have Open Houses/ Preview Days.  This is a day to visit the campus and learn more about the school.  For example, UC Merced and Cal State East Bay (which is NOT an impacted college so it is easier to get in and easier to get the major you want) will be having their Preview Days this Saturday, October 18th.  Check out your favorite colleges on-line for their dates.

ADDITIONALLY, Loyola Marymount University (which is in LA closer to the beach) will be having an Open House on Sunday, October 19th.  DePaul University (which is in Chicago) will be having a meeting for students and their parents on Monday, October 20, at 7:00 pm at Hilton Pasadena, 168 S Los Robles Ave. Pasadena, 91101.  CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY (located in Pittsburgh, PA) is having an Open House in the Los Angeles area for students and their families on Sunday, October 19th at 2 pm.  They will be meeting at the Irvine Marriott, 18000 Von Karman Ave., Irvine, 92612.  Register on-line or call 412.268.2082; RSVP required.  The hour-long session will let you know all about the school.
