GENERAL

JOURNALISM/PONY EXPRESS is looking for a few good students to replace some graduating seniors.  If you like to write, take pictures, use photoshop or indesign or want to learn, see Mr. Dubin in B7 or speak to your counselor.  It is not too late to sign up!

DRESS CODE:  Students are reminded about the dress code at Canyon High School.  Crop tops, halter and strapless tops, low cut blouses, see-through or backless shirts and swim suit tops are NOT ALLOWED!  Also, gang styles, accessories, symbols and clothing modifications are not allowed.  T-shirts with graphics which depict anti-social behavior, controlled substances, alcohol beverages, violence, or sexual activities are prohibited.

GRAD-O-GRAMS ARE ON SALE NOW!  If you have a friend who is graduating or a teacher or staff member that you'd like to thank for their service this year, then buy a Grad-o-Gram from a YES-I-CAN member.  For only $4, your friend or staff member will receive a card, a graduation bear, and a lollipop to be delivered to them during class time.  Grad-o-grams will be on sale this week on the outdoor stage during both brunches or you can order them in C3.  They will be delivered next week. 

HERE IS A GREAT “TWO FOR ONE” deal if you are responsible enough to handle it.  If you are going to be a junior or senior next year, consider adding the “WORK EXPERIENCE” class to your fall schedule.  You will be issued a work permit and you will be earning money while you complete up to 40 credits.  The Work Experience Class will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your professional ability to work while being responsible by attending your classes.  Class size is limited.  If interested contact    Mr. Ward or your Counselor.

SUMMER MELTDOWN tickets on sale in C3.  The concert is THIS Saturday at the Plaza Theater in Newhall. Over 30 acts for the low price of $10.  Headliners include Iration, Mod Sun, Vibe, Pacific Dub, and 25 other acts. Tickets are $20 online and the day of so buy them now!

ARE YOU IN SPANISH 1B OR SPANISH 2B and you might get a D or an F?  Well, these classes are going to be offered in summer school at Golden Valley.  This is a GREAT opportunity for YOU because you can re-take the class, keep the credits with the higher grade and you can go onto Spanish 2 in the fall, complete your A-G for a CSU school, or be able to go on to Spanish 3 if you are interested in a more competitive school.  Such a deal!  So, use the regular summer school form and write in either Spanish 1B or 2B on the form.  Golden Valley already has many sign-ups!

IMPACT CLUB:   We are having a mandatory meeting on Tuesday, May 22 at lunch in U-7.  We will be holding officer interviews for next year.  See you there!

SENIORS

SENIOR SIGNING PARTY: Seniors, do you hate your friends, pizza, and having a good time? Then skip the senior signing party and wait in line with the underclassmen for your yearbook next week... Otherwise there are a few tickets left, so buy one before they sell out completely. $7 in ASB.

 SENIORS:  Mark your calendars for the Senior Sunset on Monday, May 28 at 7:00 p.m.  It will be a cost-free night where we will be watching a movie on the inflatable big screen.  Bring blankets and chairs to watch on the football field.  Dinner will be served, but drinks will not be provided.

Young Scholar Program - California State University Dominguez Hills offers DISTANCE LEARNING college courses for high school students in California.  They can earn up to six units of college credit each semester for $3.50.  Courses are broadcast live on cable television and webcast live on the Internet at http://dhtv.csudh.edu each semester on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 to 4:30PM.  Students who view the live broadcasts/webcasts can interact with the instructor by phone or e-mail. Students can also view archived videos of the classes at http://youtube.com/csudhtv. Credits for the courses are recorded on a Dominguez Hills transcript which can be transferred to any college or university. Want to learn more about architecture and design?  SCI-Arc's Design Immersion Days is a four-week summer program for rising juniors and seniors that will help students learn freehand sketching, photography, critical and analytical thinking, non-linear thinking, design drawing, design modeling, graphic presentation, and portfolio layout and design.  Dates are Mon, June 25 - Sat, July 21, 2012.  Call 213.356.5345 and ask for Kirstie or use kirstie@sciarc.edu   SCI- Arc is in LA, in the downtown Arts District.  There is a $25 application fee but you let them know if you are interested in financial aid for the tuition.

Are you interested in taking classes in St. Louis, Missouri?  Washington University in St. Louis has a summer program for high school students.  They have BOTH a Scholars Program (classes in bio-medical, languages, humanities, economics, and more to choose from) and three institutes that include a Writing, Pre-med, or a Photojournalism Institutes.  Go to summerexperiences.wustl.edu    There is a $35 application fee.

Did you want to get a head start on your college experience in Johnson and Wales University?  If you are a junior, you can apply for their Early Enrollment Program.  It is called EEP.  They have four campuses (Providence, RI, North Miami, FL, Denver, CO, or Charlotte, NC).  For your senior year, you would attend there, earning college AND high school credits.  So when you graduate from high school, you will also have a year of college done.  Their programs are in Hospitality, College of Culinary Arts, College of Business, Technology (only at Providence) OR Arts & Sciences (only at Providence). The BEST BENEFIT is that you is that for the first year they only charge you HALF of the normal tuition. Getting Ready for Fall:

COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS will be hosting a Summer Institute for incoming 9th and 10th grade students this summer.  The goal of the Institute is to provide hands-on career exploration and learning opportunities to students in a variety of areas and subjects including: culinary arts, robotics, motion picture special effects, video game design, sports medicine, welding, and alternative energy fabrication. The camp will run the week of July 30th through August 3rd, 9 a.m to 3:30 p.m. Registration, as well as course descriptions, are available online at www.canyons.edu/communityed

AUDITIONS for the fall 2012 children's theatre production "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" will take place in the Q-Theatre on Thursday May 17th at 2 PM for those without a 7th period or 3 PM for those with a 7th period. No preparation necessary.

Hart School District is hosting its Second Annual College & Career Fair on Thursday evening, September 13th in the gymnasium at Golden Valley High School from 6:00 - 9:00pm.  This event is free and open to all high school students in the district, but is most appropriate for juniors and seniors.  We also encourage parents and family members to attend.

Students will have the opportunity to meet with 2-year and 4-year college representatives as well as explore other career oriented post-secondary options.   Workshops on a variety of college and career topics will also be offered.  Check the district Career Center website www.hartdistrictcareercenter.com for more program details.

There is a rumor going around that tickets were included in the senior fun pack...This rumor is false. So if you would like to go then buy a ticket before they are sold out. Yearbooks are also still available for $95 in ASB get them while they last.

ATTENTION SENIORS:  Final Transcript requests are due ASAP, and no later than Tuesday, May 29^th – Graduation Day, in order for us to mail them out on time by June 15^th.

*If you want any transcripts mailed to your home, just write down how many you would like on the white Final Transcript request form, and be sure to include a SELF ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE for each transcript you request.  In other words, if you want three transcripts mailed to your home, you must supply to us three self-addressed stamped envelopes along with your white Final Transcript request form.

*Also, please be sure to complete a white Final Transcript request form for each college you want your transcript mailed to.  It is very important to write down the correct name and address of the college of your choice.

CHOIR SPRING CONCERT--TODAY and Wednesday, May 15th & 16th, the choirs will present their annual spring concert at Golden Valley's Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m.  The cost is $5 for students with an ASB card and $7 for general admission.  You will hear a wide variety of songs.  You don't want to miss this great evening of music.

DRESS CODE:  Students are reminded about the dress code at Canyon High School.  Crop tops, halter and strapless tops, low cut blouses, see-through or backless shirts and swim suit tops are NOT ALLOWED!  Also, gang styles, accessories, symbols and clothing modifications are not allowed.  T-shirts with graphics which depict anti-social behavior, controlled substances, alcohol beverages, violence, or sexual activities are prohibited>

FRESHMEN! COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS will be hosting a Summer Institute for incoming 9th and 10th grade students this summer.  The goal of the Institute is to provide hands-on career exploration and learning opportunities to students in a variety of areas and subjects including: culinary arts, robotics, motion picture special effects, video game design, sports medicine, welding, and alternative energy fabrication. The camp will run the week of July 30th through August 3rd, 9 a.m to 3:30 p.m. Registration, as well as course descriptions, are available online at www.canyons.edu/communityed

COLLEGE & CAREER FAIR:  The William S. Hart School District is hosting its Second Annual College & Career Fair on Thursday evening, September 13th in the gymnasium at Golden Valley High School from 6:00 - 9:00pm.  This event is free and open to all high school students in the district, but is most appropriate for juniors and seniors.  We also encourage parents and family members to attend.

Students will have the opportunity to meet with 2-year and 4-year college representatives as well as explore other career oriented post-secondary options.   Workshops on a variety of college and career topics will also be offered.  Check the district Career Center website www.hartdistrictcareercenter.com for more program details.

 The ROP Career Internship class is having a summer class from 6/18 - 7/18. Students complete an unpaid workplace internship in order to learn about a career field.  Students work from 4 - 12 hours a week and earn class credit.  They work at the internship site and attend class each week.  Students must attend all class dates.  Students will be chosen who have a good record of grades, attendance, and behavior. Students must provide their own transportation.  To enroll, students need to ROP application and return to their ROP advisor by May 17.  See ROP advisor for details or the website: www.hartrop.com, Career Internship class.

THE CANYON THEATRE GUILD is offering a $500 scholarship.  You do not need to have Canyon Theatre Guild experience to apply.  This application requires a picture, essay, and letters of recommendation.  The application is in the counseling office and needs to mailed by May 15th.

COC is offering a fast track program over the summer for seniors interested in aerospace or biomedical manufacturing.  If you would like two months of training and then be able to start into a career this might a great opportunity for you.  The best part is that if you qualify for the program, IT IS FREE!  If you are interested, there is a program orientation at COC this Saturday, May 12th from 9am to 4 pm.  You must register online to attend.  You can find out more information by visiting your counselor or going to the Canyon High website.

THE CANYON STAFF is giving 2 scholarships of $400.  This scholarship is open to ALL Canyon seniors that plan to attend a college, university, or trade school.  Applications are in the counseling office and are due to Mrs. King in room G105 by Friday, May 11th.

THE EILEEN SHUMER CRAIG SCHOLARSHIP is awarding a scholarship of $700 to a Canyon senior with a GPA of 2.5 or higher that has been active in the community and demonstrates a financial need.  Please pick up an application in the counseling office and return it to Mrs. Goller by May 11th.
